 Summer Youth Art Classes

The Meridian Museum of Art’s summer art classes for children will return on Monday, June 2, featuring an outstanding collection of classes for children ages 4-12. The classes will begin the week of June 2-6, and will include Drawing, Painting, Pottery, Pottery II, Cartooning, “A Book About Me”, Metal Jewelrymaking, Origami, Papier Mache Portrait Sculpture, Mask-Making, Mixed Media, Printmaking, and Origami. The classes are one week long, Monday-Friday, and last an hour each day. The cost is $30 per class, or $25 for members or children of members. All materials are provided as part of the tuition.
The classes are open to everyone, including young people visiting relatives in Meridian for the summer. Space in the classes is limited, and some classes fill up quickly. Dates and details of this summer’s Museum classes include:
Classes for Ages 4-5
Drawing (June 2-6), Ages 4-5 Class #1: 10-11 a.m. Class #2: 1-2 p.m. Instructor: Bonnie Busbee An introduction to color in terms of composition, mass, value, and color theory. Still lifes, landscapes, and “mindscapes” will be pursued.
Painting (June 9-13), Ages 4-5 Class #1: 10-11 a.m. Class #2: 1-2 p.m. Instructor: Bonnie Busbee An introduction to color in terms of composition, mass, value, and color theory. Still lifes, landscapes, and “mindscapes” will be pursued.
Classes for Ages 6-12

Pottery (June 16-20), Ages 6-9 9-10 a.m. Instructor: Sylvia Follis Students will make pots, bowls, boxes and other objects using hand building skills with natural clay. Students will also be instructed in using the wheel and throwing a pot.
Pottery II/Sculpture (June 16-20), Ages 10-12 10:30-11:30 a.m. Instructor: Sylvia Follis Students will learn three-dimensional construction and sculptural detailing, create small sculptural figures, and will learn to use the pottery wheel.
Cartooning (June 16-20), Ages 6-12 1-2 p.m. Instructor: Sylvia Follis Students will design an original character, write a story, and use those creations to draw a storyboard, and learn basic animation through the construction of a flip book and a zoetrope.
“A Book About Me” (June 16-20), Ages 6-12 2-3 p.m. Instructor: Sylvia Follis Students will experiment with materials to make books in unusual ways, with a variety of materials – books that are about you, your imagination, and your world.
Metal Jewelrymaking (June 23-27), Ages 6-12 Ages 6-9: 11 a.m.-12 noon Ages 10-12: 1-2 p.m. Instructor: Charles Muñoz An introduction to metals and their qualities, forming metals, tools, use of safety equipment, shaping and cutting, and how metals may be joined together.
Origami (June 23-27), Ages 6-12 2-3 p.m. Instructor: Raymond Woods. The Japanese art of paperfolding to create objects such as animals, symbols, baskets, and boxes.
Papier Mache Portrait Sculpture (June 23-27), Ages 6-12 3-4 p.m. Instructor: Doris McKinney Students will create life-size papier mache sculpture “portraits” of characters of their choice.
Mask Making (July 7-11), Ages 6-12 11 a.m. – 12 noon Instructor: Kate Cherry Students design and decorate their own masks, using and traditional and contemporary techniques and designs.
Mixed Media (July 7-11), Ages 6-12 1-2 p.m. Instructor: Kate Cherry Painting t-shirts, drawing and painting with mixed media, making collages, and printmaking with natural objects.
Printmaking (July 7-11), Ages 6-12 2-3 p.m. Instructor: Kate Cherry A fun introduction to relief printmaking in five easy lessons. Using a variety of materials and techniques, students will explore the basics of designs, plan out their images, build their printmaking plates, and print their images.

The final event of the summer programs is a special exhibit and reception on Sunday, July 20, featuring all of the artwork created by these young artists.
The Museum’s Summer Art Classes for children are sponsored by The Riley Foundation, the Community Foundation of East Mississippi, the Norfolk Southern Foundation, Citizen’s National Bank, the Kiwanis Club of Meridian, the Mississippi Arts Commission, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the City of Meridian.
