EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR:  The Meridian Museum of Art (meridianmuseum.org) seeks an experienced professional to serve as chief administrator.  The MMA is a small regional museum with strong education program, rotating exhibitions, and collection of 20th and 21st century art emphasizing Mississippi and Alabama artists. This is a challenging and exciting opportunity for an articulate and aggressive manager who can build constituencies and develop funding sources while managing operations.  Responsible for managing collection, personnel, finances, and facilities; arranging exhibitions and education programs; writing grants, securing other contributions, and building membership.  Advanced degree or equivalent in museum administration experience preferred.  Salary and benefits negotiable.  Start June 1 – July 1, 2008.  Job description and duties are available on MMA’s website. JOB DESCRIPTION

Director, Meridian Museum of Art

General: Has full responsibility for the daily administration and operation of the Museum, including managing personnel, finances, facilities, and year-around programming. Serves as an ex-officio member of the Board of Directors of the Meridian Art Association, the governing authority for the Meridian Museum of Art (MMA). With guidance from the Board’s Executive Committee, devises and leads the implementation of the Museum’s strategic plan in keeping with its Mission, Goals, and Objectives.

Supervision: Reports to and is directly supervised by the President of the Meridian Art Association. Job performance is reviewed annually by the Executive Committee of the Board. Bonus/salary increases subject to approval of the full Board.

Requirements: Advanced degree or equivalent in museum administration experience required. Must be an articulate, aggressive leader and strategic planner who can build constituencies and develop funding sources while managing operations.

Specific Job Duties:


Serves as the principal representative of the MMA to the public, promoting its programs and events to the community.

Performs liaison function between the Board, all committees, volunteers, and staff; attends all committee meetings and assists as needed.

Provides information and guidance to the Board in the formulation of policies; executes approved policies.

Develops the agenda and other materials for all Executive Committee and Board meetings.

Seeks and assimilates input on member needs and desires for Board action.

Meets with the President and Board of Directors to devise and implement long-range plans and activities that promote growth of the MMA.

Keeps the Executive Committee and the Board fully informed as to the progress of Museum operations.

Coordinates the orientation of Board members; assists the nominating committee in selecting a slate of officers and Board members yearly.

Evaluates programs and services, making changes as needed.

Identifies potential new areas of service.

Trains and supervises personnel, both staff and volunteer.

Supervises care and maintenance of facilities.

Maintains and cares for MMA’s assets and its permanent collection of art.

Secures a qualified juror for the annual Bi-State Competition.

Schedules and hangs all exhibits.

Plans educational programs for both children and adults; implements these programs with the appropriate committees of the Board and volunteers. Schedules and conducts all tours of the Museum.

Works with the Meridian Arts Council, of which the MMA is an affiliate member, and other arts organizations in the community.

Strives to build community relations and involvement in the Museum through public speaking engagements and scheduling/supervising use of the Museum for community activities.

Establishes yearly operating budget with appropriate Board personnel.

Writes yearly grants to secure continued funding from the City of Meridian and the Mississippi Arts Commission for the operation of the MMA.

Investigates new fund-raising ideas and seeks long-range financing for the Museum with the aid of the Board; supervises and coordinates all fundraising activities.

Develops brochures and other publicity documents for direct mail and the media; processes all mail.

Performs other duties as requested by the President and the Board.
